Insulated Yurts for Year-Round Living
Handcrafted Yurts with Natural Wool Felt Insulation
Our insulated yurts are made for people who want more than a summer tent. They have a strong canvas outer cover for weather protection, natural wool felt insulation for warmth and comfort, and a clean inner lining to give the yurt a bright, finished interior.
Felt insulation transforms a canvas yurt into a much more comfortable living space. It gives the yurt a feeling of warmth, quietness, strength and security. Once people have lived with a properly insulated yurt, they rarely want to go back to a thin canvas cover alone.
Insulation matters in both winter and summer. In cold weather it helps the yurt hold warmth from a stove or heater. In hot weather it helps soften the heat from the sun, making the yurt calmer and more comfortable inside.
“Wow... that is all I can say when I gaze up at the beautifully crafted oak crown you have made.”

Natural Wool Felt Insulation
Our felt is made from 100% sheep’s wool, treated and certified to be fire resistant using natural salts. The weight and thickness are chosen for European conditions, and the felt is selected so that it does not wick moisture back into the yurt.
Inside the felt is a bright washable liner, made from certified fire-retardant material. This keeps the interior clean and light year after year, and is especially important if you plan to use a stove in the yurt.
Built as an Insulated Yurt from the Beginning
When you order an insulated yurt from us, we do not simply add some felt to one of our standard yurts. The yurt is made from the beginning to work as an insulated structure, with subtle but important differences in the way the covers, liner and insulation are designed to fit together.
The covers are cut and sewn to a pattern developed in our own workshop, so the yurt pitches cleanly and the layers fit properly. The system is also adjustable, so the insulation can be removed when needed and the outer covers will still fit the frame correctly.
We have been making felt insulated yurts for over 20 years, and have developed our yurt doors and windows to work with them.
Double-Canvas Roof System
Unique to Yurt Workshop, our insulated and Glass Wall yurts include not just one canvas roof cover, but an additional canvas roof cover for greater durability in more demanding climates.
This double-canvas roof system gives extra protection above the insulation and helps the yurt perform better in rain, wind, sun and changing European weather conditions.
Can You Live in an Insulated Yurt All Year Round?
Yes. Our insulated yurts are made for year-round use. With wool felt insulation, a good inner lining, a strong canvas cover and suitable heating, an insulated yurt becomes a warm, quiet and practical space for living, working or welcoming guests throughout the year.
As with any small building, the exact level of comfort depends on the climate, the platform, the stove or heating system, and how the yurt is used. But if you are planning a studio, retreat space, guest room, glamping yurt or full-time living space, insulation is the upgrade that makes the biggest difference.
For European conditions, we recommend felt insulation for anyone who wants a yurt that can be used properly throughout the year.

where we explain how insulation, canvas, ventilation, heating and careful use all work together.
What Is Included with an Insulated Yurt?
Our insulated yurts include the handcrafted wooden frame, canvas outer covers, natural wool felt insulation and a bright inner liner. The layers are made to work together, so the yurt feels solid, comfortable and properly finished inside.
Insulated and Glass Wall yurts also include an additional canvas roof cover. This gives extra protection in more demanding weather and helps the yurt stand up to long-term use in European conditions.
You can also add wooden doors, windows, Glass Wall sections, a wood-burning stove and other options depending on how you plan to use the yurt.
Insulated Yurts for Homes, Studios, Retreats and Glamping
Insulated yurts are especially useful for guest accommodation, glamping sites, yoga and retreat spaces, garden rooms, studios and year-round living spaces. They feel more finished inside than a basic canvas yurt and give a much greater sense of comfort and enclosure.
They are also a good choice for schools, nurseries and outdoor learning spaces, where warmth, quietness and comfort matter through more of the year. You can read more about our school yurts.
If you are not sure which size or specification you need, tell us how you plan to use the yurt and where it will be installed. We can help you think through the size, insulation, doors, windows, stove options and delivery.
“I really want to order one of your yurts. A friend of mine has one of yours from 15 years ago and she hasn't had to do any maintenance or replace anything at all. Insanely good quality.”
