We are specialists when it comes to insulating yurts.
We have been making felt insulated yurts for more than twenty years, and over that time we have learnt an enormous amount about how the felt, liner, covers, frame, doors and windows all need to work together.
Felt insulation transforms a tent into a home.
It gives the yurt a feeling of warmth, substance and security. In winter it helps keep the warmth inside, and in the blazing heat of summer it helps keep the heat out.
Once you have spent time in a properly insulated yurt, you understand the difference.
And, as with everything we make, it is not simply about adding good materials. The whole yurt has to work together.

Natural Wool Felt Insulation
We use 100% natural sheep's wool felt.
The weight and thickness are chosen for the conditions our yurts encounter across the UK & Europe. We also select the felt carefully for the way it behaves with moisture. It is not simply a question of buying some wool felt and putting it into a yurt.
Wool is a wonderful material for the job. It insulates against cold, but it also helps protect the interior from the heat of the sun. It brings a softness and substance to the inside of the yurt that you simply do not get from canvas alone.
Inside the felt is a bright, washable liner. This keeps the inside of the yurt looking clean and bright year after year and gives the finished space a proper interior.
The felt and inner lining we use are supplied with fire-retardant certification, something particularly important where a stove is being used or the yurt is intended for commercial or public use.
Crafted as an Insulated Yurt
When you order an insulated yurt from us, we do not simply add some felt to one of our Canvas Yurts.
As you might expect from Yurt Workshop, the yurt is specially crafted to work as an insulated yurt, with some subtle but important differences.
Over the years we have developed our own patterns for the liner, insulation and covers so that all the layers fit properly around the frame, crown, doors and windows and the yurt remains straightforward to pitch.
The way the covers overlap and adjust is particularly important. The system allows for the extra thickness of the insulation and can also be adjusted if the insulation is removed.
These are details that have come from actually making, pitching and living with yurts for many years.
Double-Canvas Roof
One of the features that sets our insulated yurts apart is the double-canvas roof.
Rather than asking one roof cover to do all the work, we add a second canvas roof above it.
This gives another layer of protection over the roof and insulation beneath, particularly useful in the wet and changeable climates we encounter across Europe.
The outer roof also takes much of the direct punishment from sun, wind and rain.
It is a simple idea, but it makes a great deal of sense.
Made for Year-Round Use
Our insulated yurts are made to stay up and be used throughout the year.
We have customers using them as homes, guest accommodation, studios, therapy rooms, retreat spaces, yoga spaces, offices and all sorts of other things across Europe.
Comfort in any yurt also depends on the climate, the platform, heating and how the space is being used. But if you want a yurt that can genuinely become part of everyday life rather than something used only in fine weather, felt insulation makes an enormous difference.

What Is Included?
An insulated yurt begins with the complete Yurt Workshop yurt: natural chestnut wall frame and roof poles, handcrafted solid oak crown and fitted canvas covers.
We then add the bright inner liner, 100% natural wool felt insulation and the additional outer roof cover.
Doors, windows, increased wall height, stove fittings and other options can be added depending on how you want the yurt to look and how you plan to use it.
We make yurts from 10 feet to 25 feet in diameter. You can explore the different sizes on our Yurt Sizes page.
Once we know the size and what you have in mind, I will prepare a detailed estimate showing exactly what is included.

Ordering an Insulated Yurt
Ordering usually starts with a conversation.
There are lots of questions when you are buying a yurt. The process of looking and thinking can be both exciting and challenging, and there is no reason you should have to work everything out by yourself.
Those that know me will tell you I like talking about yurts.
Tell me where the yurt will be, what you want to use it for and anything you already have in mind. We can then work through the size, wall height, doors, windows and anything else that matters.
You do not need to have the specification worked out before you contact me.
Once we know what you want, I will prepare a detailed estimate showing exactly what is included.
A 50% deposit confirms the order and puts your yurt into our workshop schedule. The remaining balance is due one week before dispatch. Delivery is quoted separately.
