How You Want to Use It
People use yurts in very different ways, so we don't expect everyone to want exactly the same thing.
You may already know exactly what you want. If so, you can go straight to our yurt sizes and prices, choose the yurt that suits you and take it from there.
Or perhaps you only know what you want the yurt to do. In that case, this page takes you through the main choices: size, insulation, doors, windows, Glass Wall arrangements and colour.
You don't have to make it complicated. A simple Canvas Yurt may be exactly what you want. Or we can work with you to make something much more individual.
I have been making yurts since 2005 and have talked through hundreds of different projects over the years. Tell me what you have in mind, however simple or developed the idea is, and we can take it from there.
A Yurt Workshop Yurt
A Yurt Workshop yurt is not simply a collection of options. The proportions, the natural chestnut frame, the solid oak crown, the way the roof poles meet the wall, the way the covers are made and fitted, and dozens of other details all matter.
We have spent more than twenty years making yurts and refining the way we build them. We respect the traditional structure because it works, while using modern materials and methods where they genuinely make the yurt better.
People often tell us that our yurts look different. They do. It is not one particular feature, but the result of getting all these things right together: the proportions, the materials, the workmanship and the attention to detail.
We don't cut corners or build yurts down to a price. We make them properly, and we take a great deal of pride in the result.
We make fine yurts.
That foundation stays the same. What changes is how we make the yurt suit you: its size, insulation, doors, windows, glass, colour and the other details that matter for the way you want to use it.
Yurt Size
Size changes the character of a yurt more than almost anything else. A small yurt can feel wonderfully intimate. As the diameter increases, the sense of space changes completely.
Think about what needs to happen inside it. Beds, furniture, tables, a kitchen, working space, groups of people: all of these affect the size that makes sense.
Each size has its own starting price for the complete canvas yurt. You can see the starting price on the individual yurt pages below, then add insulation, doors, windows and other options as required.
If you are unsure, ask me. It is much easier for me to suggest a size once I know what you are hoping to do than for you to try to work it out from floor area alone.

Canvas or Insulated
Canvas Yurts
Every yurt starts with our complete canvas yurt, with its natural chestnut frame, solid oak crown and proofed poly-cotton covers. The starting prices shown on our individual size pages are for this version.
The canvas matters enormously. It has to protect the yurt from the weather, breathe properly, fit well and look right. We use material we know and trust, and each set of covers is made to fit the yurt it belongs to.
Adding Insulation
If you want an insulated yurt, we add 100% natural wool felt insulation, a fire-retardant inner liner and an additional roof cover.
The wool felt makes a huge difference. In winter it helps retain warmth inside the yurt, while in summer it helps keep the heat out.
Our insulated yurts are made for year-round use.
Doors and Windows
This is where the layout of a yurt can become much more individual. Doors and windows change the light, the views, the ventilation and the way you move through and use the space.
We make solid wooden doors, full-glass doors, fixed windows and opening windows specifically for our yurts. They can be arranged around a particular view, the way you want to furnish the yurt, where you want to enter it or simply where you want the light.
The arrangement can be very simple or quite elaborate. We can work it out with you rather than asking you to choose a standard layout from a catalogue.
Our doors and windows have also been developed specifically to work with the yurt structure. There is quite a lot more to them than simply fitting a conventional door or window into the wall.
Glass Wall Yurts
Our Glass Wall yurts take this much further. Natural chestnut frame sections are fitted with glass doors, windows and wall panels, opening the yurt to the landscape around it.
I love what glass does to a yurt. You still have the curves, canvas and natural chestnut frame of the traditional structure, but with much more light and a completely different relationship with the view outside.
We can use a relatively small amount of glass or create a much wider glazed section, depending on the yurt and the site. The aim is always to make the glass feel like part of the yurt, rather than something imposed on it afterwards.
There is no standard Glass Wall arrangement. We work out the combination of doors, windows and fixed glass to suit the yurt, the site and what you want from the space.

Canvas Colours
Colour has more effect on a yurt than you might imagine. It can make it sit almost unnoticed in its surroundings or turn it into something much more striking.
The walls, roof, edging and crown cover do not all have to be the same colour, so there is plenty of room to make the finished yurt your own.
I tend to have opinions about colours, particularly about how they age and how they behave in strong sun, so if you are trying to choose between them, ask.
Working It Out Together
Putting together a yurt usually starts with a conversation. Sometimes that is a phone call, sometimes email, and often there is a bit of back and forth while the yurt takes shape.
You might arrive knowing the exact size, colour and arrangement you want. Or you might simply tell me that you want somewhere to live, teach, work, accommodate guests or sit and look at a particular view.
From there we can work through the size, insulation, doors, windows, Glass Wall sections, colours and anything else that matters to you. You do not need to have everything worked out before you contact me.
Once we have a clear idea of the yurt you want, I will prepare a detailed estimate based on what we have discussed.
From there, if you decide to go ahead, we confirm the order and put the yurt into our workshop schedule.
