We have made yurts for nurseries, schools and universities for many years.
They have been used as classrooms, creative spaces, quiet rooms, outdoor learning spaces and flexible rooms for small groups.
A yurt gives you something very different from another ordinary classroom. The circular space, natural chestnut frame and oak crown give the room a character of its own, and the whole structure feels warm, light and much less institutional.
For a school or nursery planning to use the yurt regularly, an insulated yurt is usually the natural starting point. From there we can work with doors, opening windows and Glass Wall sections to suit the way you want to use the space.

What Sort of Yurt?
If the yurt is going to be used regularly through the year, I would normally start by looking at an insulated yurt.
We use natural wool felt insulation, a bright fire-retardant inner liner and our double-canvas roof system. It gives the yurt warmth and substance and makes it a much more useful room throughout the year.
If the yurt is for more occasional or seasonal use, a Canvas Yurt may be enough.
Light, Doors and Windows
Glass can make a big difference in a school yurt.
A full-glass door or a few well-placed windows can bring much more daylight into the room. A wider Glass Wall opens the space further and gives a much stronger connection to the outside.
We can combine fixed glass, opening windows and glass doors in different ways. The point is not to add glass for the sake of it, but to make the room work well for the way it will actually be used.
What Size?
We make yurts from 10 to 25 feet in diameter.
The useful question is not simply how big the yurt is, but what needs to happen inside it. A room for a small group, reading or quiet work needs something different from a space for a full class, music, movement or workshops.
Tell me how many people will normally use the room and what you want to do in it. I can usually help you narrow the size down quite quickly.
Made for the Project
We make the yurts ourselves, so you are not choosing from a fixed school package.
We can work through the size, insulation, door position, opening windows, Glass Wall layout and other details around the way you want the room to work.
If easier access needs to be considered, tell me at the beginning and we can take that into account while working out the yurt.
