Almost every yurt that leaves our workshop has one of our wooden doors, and very often one or more windows, if not a full-on Glass Wall.
These are all made to our designs, developed over many years specifically for yurts. They are not simply house doors and windows adapted to fit. The proportions, weight, structure and details all matter, and getting them right took time.
Sometimes all that is wanted is a beautiful glazed door looking out onto the garden. Sometimes it is an opening window beside the bed. Sometimes we build an entire wall of glass around the view.
Alongside the joinery we make a smaller range of practical and decorative pieces: woven tension bands, painted crowns, shelves, groundsheets and finished crown supports.
Doors and Windows
A good yurt door is a rather particular thing. It has to be substantial enough to last, light enough to work happily with a tensile structure, and it has to look right.
We spent years getting our designs to the point where we were happy with them, looking closely at traditional yurt doors, the joints, the threshold, the way the lattice pulls against the frame and all those small details that turn out not to be small at all.
Windows came later. For a long time I resisted them because I was rather purist about keeping the yurt traditional. Then someone working with me wanted a window in the yurt we were making together. We tried it. It was brilliant. We never looked back.
From there came fixed and opening windows, glazed doors, double doors and eventually the Glass Wall yurts we make today.
Sometimes one beautiful door and a well-placed window are enough. Sometimes the whole point is to open the yurt towards the view.
Woven Tension Bands
A woven tension band is one of those details that can completely change the inside of a yurt. It follows the wall all the way round, bringing colour and pattern into the frame and making the whole interior feel more finished.
We can supply our woven tension band to suit the size of your yurt.
Painted Crowns
Our solid oak crowns are beautiful left natural, but some customers want the crown to become a stronger feature within the yurt.
A crown can be painted and decorated by hand, with the design worked around the size and proportions of the crown. Each one is priced individually according to the amount of decorative work involved.
Yurt Shelves
Our suspended shelves are made to work with the curved interior of the yurt. They are made from pine, finished with oil and wax and hung with strong cord.
They are simple, useful and take up no floor space. They work well for books, lamps, mugs and the small things that otherwise end up scattered around a round room.
Heavy-Duty Groundsheets
We can supply heavy-duty groundsheets made from strong building-grade PVC. They sit beneath the yurt and help protect the floor area from moisture rising from below.
The edges rise approximately 20 cm around the wall to add protection around the perimeter. They are normally available in mid-grey or light blue.
Crown Supports
Crown supports are upright posts positioned beneath the central oak crown. In Mongolian gers they are often a permanent and decorative part of the structure.
For Yurt Workshop yurts of 18 feet and larger, a basic unfinished set is normally supplied to make pitching easier and safer. They can be removed once the yurt is standing.
If you want the supports to remain permanently in place, we can make a more finished version to suit the yurt.
