Caring For Your Yurt

how to Look after your yurt

Our yurts need surprisingly little maintenance.

Canvas Proofing

Canvas needs to be cared for to make sure it works correctly and gives a long life. The proofing added at the time of manufacturing will slowly become less effective. To make sure your canvas remains in good working condition it is recommended it is re-proofed yearly using Nikwax Tent and Gear SolarProof

Cleaning the Canvas

Do not use detergents as it removes the proofing. Never use high-pressure water it will wash out the proofing If the canvas is discoloured then clean it with Nikwax Tech Wash

The exterior woodwork, after a number of years, may eventually need a top coat applying. Use a high-quality water-based matt varnish. The chestnut frame will rarely need further treatment.

Storing Your Yurt

Canvas is 50% cotton and despite its rot proofing, if left in the wrong conditions for a long enough it will mould and eventually rot.  If you are not using your yurt consider taking it down, making sure it is bone dry before storing it in a dry place. The felt must also be dry before storage, so leave it in the sun/in a hot room before storing it.

Bad Weather

Never open the door, unless absolutely necessary, in a storm if the door faces the oncoming wind. The yurt roof can act like a parachute and wreck the yurt.
Yurts, with the covers and straps, fitted correctly and tight, are stable enough to withstand a common storm. In extreme conditions, find safe shelter. In a storm, there are a number of things that need to be done.
Attach storm ropes over the yurt to hold it down.  It is better to pre-prepare (or purchase from us) these ropes and tie them at the crossover points before putting them on the yurt.  Use good quality polyester ropes available form any hardware store.  Polyester is resistant to the sun and you can then leave them on all year round.  See the diagram below for how to arrange them and use big stones or stakes next to the yurt walls (vertically below) to anchor the ropes.
