Mongolian Ger

Mongolian Ger

makers of felted ger

Mongolian ger are strong, beautiful homes that have evolved through generations since before the times of Genghis Khan.

The design is timeless and classic, a harmonious space to live within.

Yurt Workshop ger have a number of features that are rarely found on ger made in Europe.

The frame of our ger are made from chestnut. Each pole is steamed, stripped, cleaned and oiled to create an attractive finish of the correct shape. The wall (han) poles are curved (using steam) as is necessary for a real yurt.

Oak Crown

The tonoo (crown) is made from oak. The pattern is Mongolian. Each crown is hand made and finished with oil or painted to order. If you desire we can paint them. We have been told they are the crowning glory of our yurts.

Depending on the use you intend for your ger we offer a range of covers. A simple but effective canvas cover is standard with our ger. For many this is sufficient and provides an excellent choice. Indeed, we have customers who have told us a canvas cover is sufficient even when its snowing outside.

For others who intend to live in their ger they might consider insulation.

In Mongolia felt insulation is always used. A cotton liner for the inside, felt for insulation and canvas to keep the rain out. On top of this is another cotton outer layer. For a well insulated ger we believe the best experience is gained from using canvas and 100% wool felt. A cotton liner is also important to brighten up the interior where felt has been used as insulation.

We can supply the cover you want, that matches your needs. Simple canvas or a fully covered and felted ger.

Yurt Workshop Customer Comments

Richard Everiss, Yorkshire Planetarium:

The Ger itself is simply a thing of understated beauty. Adapted to meet my requirements it could have been a disaster but the care and attention which has been lavished on it during its construction is evident. Rather like finding a smooth pebble on a beach, so Robert and his wife Ratna have handcrafted a building that is wonderful to touch and feels naturally balanced.
