Yurt Workshop Yurts - FAQs

Authentic Design Specialised for the European Climate

How long does it take to put up my yurt?
It depends on the yurt size. In general after doing once or twice the following times are accurate:

Size   Time to Put My Yurt Up
10' (3.05m)   20-30 mins
12' (3.66m)   45 mins
16' (4.9m)   60 mins
21' (6.4m)   120 mins

How much will my yurt weigh?

Size   Weight
10' (3.05m)   40-50 Kg
12' (3.66m)   120-130 Kg
16' (4.9m)   220-230 Kg
21' (6.4m)   450-460 Kg

Using Your Yurt as a Permanent Dwelling

A yurt can be lived in all year round. With a heater or log burner the yurt is very warm in winter. A felted yurt makes a great home.

Can I leave my Yurt Up All Year Round

If you plan to occupy your ger then you can leave it up all year round. If you don’t plan to live in it all year round and if you plan to leave it up all winter then you need to make sure it doesn’t get damp. Visit the yurt regularly and put the stove on to heat it through.

Note: If left up unoccupied in a wet climate during the winter the chances are it will gradually get damp and if it has no chance to dry out this could result in mould forming on the frame and canvas. The solution to this is to take it down in the winter or use it regularly so it is dried out.

Yurts need using to ensure they stay in good condition.

What about Planning Permission

Yurts work very well as homes and many of our customers live in their yurts full time in the UK and Europe.

There are no hard and fast rules and what you can and cannot do and what permissions are required varies from place to place even within the same country.

To have a yurt in your garden should not require panning permission*
Putting a yurt in a filed and living in it full time may require a permission for change of land use.

*However, if you are at all concerned check this with your local authority.
