A Glass Studio In Paradise

May 01, 2014
Glass Yurt
It was about six months ago that a beautiful and charming Norwegian lady visited us at our house in the mountains of Southern Spain. Her husband Bjorn and her were interested to see our work as they had heard we had some yurts for sale

Beautiful scenery for the art studioWe sat in the demonstration yurt and spoke about the variety of custom and bespoke work we do for our customers. I explained that we have well equipped workshop and a lot of experience of designing and building custom solutions.

We spoke of the importance of quality wood, glue, wood finish and the necessary care and attention that is required to build like a true craftsman.

J, as I will call her here, is an artist and she was looking for a new studio for her high mountain retreat.

At this point we got out the pencil and paper and J drew her dream yurt.

It was like no other design we have made before.  The size, 21 feet and 6 feet walls was not unusual but the 8m of glass in the wall was.

I had been waiting for a project like this for many years!

Glass wallsOne other requirement was the colour be in-keeping with the natural surroundings.  We suggested Sand coloured canvas, the same very standard polyester/cotton cloth we use in our standard yurts but in a beautiful sand colour.

To say they were thrilled with the result was an understatement.

J kindly sent me some photos of the day we pitched it -  The Glass Yurt.aspx

I intend to recall and share more details of HOW I learned to make yurts and why we make them as we do.

Much of my influence comes from studying with other yurt makers. And one of the most influential of these was a Kyrgyz family based in a yurt making village near to lake Issyk Kul, close to the Tian Shan mountains, Kyrgyzstan.

Richard Everiss, Yorkshire Planetarium:

The Ger itself is simply a thing of understated beauty...the care and attention which has been lavished on it during its construction is evident. Rather like finding a smooth pebble on a beach, so Robert and his wife Ratna have handcrafted a building that is wonderful to touch and feels naturally balanced.
