New For 2008:
Cotton/polyester canvas. This new canvas is much stronger and better suited to yurt covers than 100% cotton canvas. The polyester element (less than 50%) makes the material fast drying. 100% cotton is still available if you want it.
Special Features of our yurts are marked in green.
Wooden Frame
Walls
The collapsable trellis yurt frame comes in 2 or more sections. The rustic chestnut poles that make up the trellis are stripped, oiled and chamfered. The walls are steam bent to give the yurt its characteristic shape and strength. They are tied together with strong polyester cord. The yurt walls interlock and are secured using a traditional black tie.
Roof
The yurt roof poles are also rustic chestnut sourced from a sustainable farm and straightened using steam. These are oiled and chamfered and a bridle is attached to one end to enable attachment to the walls. This bridle is made how the Mongolians do and enables the roof pole to be flipped 180 degrees. We know of no other European made yurt that has this feature.
Crown
The 8 spoked wheel or crown is made of solid oak. It takes days to make and not the simple steam bent wood ring that comes with many European made yurts. Using the traditional Mongolian pattern we create a beautiful feature. The crown is oiled with high quality protective oils to emphasise the grain. The rim is mortised to accept the roof poles securely. If require your crown can be painted with a traditional Mongolian pattern or design of your choice.
Door and Door Frame
As standard the yurt comes with a Mongolian style door frame. Again this is a unique feature of our yurts and not found on other UK and European made yurts. The Mongolian door frame is distinct. It has a high threshold to prevent the ingress of wind, snow and dust. A low lintel to keep the heat in and avoid heat pockets in the roof above the door. The frame is flat and strong and on each side are three hand forged steel rings to bind the walls to. It is also painted unless you wish to have a natural stained and oiled finish. The standard yurt comes with a canvas door which has hooks and elastic to secure it.
For those who want it, our beautiful hand made wooden Mongolian doors are available. These doors look amazing. They are painted traditional Mongol colours and fitted with a security lock. Many also opt for our beautiful rustic doors, stained and oiled to look used.
Six Rings and Three Ropes
A distinctive feature of our yurts are the three ropes clasping the wall covers to the frame. On either side of the door frame are three steel rings, strong and hand forged, to thread the three ropes through. The ropes (or webbings) are tied around the frame to secure the covers and door frame to the lattice walls – in the event of high winds they prevent the covers coming off. In addition, these ropes bind the structure and give the ger more strength. Again, these important exterior ropes are nearly always absent from other UK and European made yurts.
Baggana
These supports come with 18 and 21 foot felted ger. They are very useful when putting the ger up and provide stabilisation in high winds and snow. They can be taken down if they are not required.
Covers
On a Mongolian yurts there is always felt and canvas and in most cases an inner liner. Depending on your climate, budget and your what you intend to use the ger for we can advise on what cover(s) will work best for you. However nothing beats a felted ger.
Canvas Outer Covers
We now now use fire retarded and water and rot proofed* cotton/polyester canvas that is much stronger and better suited to yurt covers than 100% cotton canvas. The polyester element (less than 50%) makes the material fast drying 100% cotton. It 100% cotton is still available if you want it.
Walls: Our wall covers are adjustable so its easy to add or remove insulation layers. The polyester cotton canvas is strong and durable and the bottom of the walls are made from PVC to prevent rot. The skirt can be tucked under the ger for added protection from the rain. We NEVER fit our covers unlike most other UK and European yurt makers as you may wish to add insulation, felt or remove it one time. Fitted covers are inferior as they are simply not adjustable and our customers appreciate the freedom our traditional covers give them.
Roof:
The roof covers are also adjustable and NOT fitted. The benefits are the same as the described for the wall covers and also make pitching the yurt simpler and easier.
The oak crown is covered with a canvas cover in the shape of a star with UV resistant polyester straps to allow it to be removed for ventilation.
Felt Covers
Nearly all our customers prefer a felted yurt. We understand why but for those who prefer it we can provide a canvas only cover. We use 100% wool felt that is washed and treated with natural salts to give added fire retardancy. The felt yurt covers are sewn in the traditional Mongolian pattern and come with a cotton liner.
