Special Features of Our Yurts
What makes our yurts special?
|
|
As far as we know we are the only yurt makers making authentic yurts in the UK and Europe. Most other yurt makers make simplified yurts based on simplified plans (no felt, no exterior ropes, wrong shape door frame, simplified crowns...)and are without many of the important features that you will find on a real Mongolian yurt.
We want to remedy the situation and make authentic yurts. Our aim is to create an authentic yurt, sensitive to the original design and heritage. Having researched the history of the yurt (www.AroundTheYurt.com) we are able to understand the design and we draw from the our research when we make our yurts.
Our yurts have some special features. These features are nothing new and are found on all traditional Mongolian ger, yet, surprisingly, not often found on European made yurts. We believe these features are important and should not be omitted. Below these features are described.
Our customers are a diverse group and therefore we listen to their needs and if they require it we can adapt the design to suit. Whatever it is we are only too delighted to discuss your needs and work out the best solution for you.
Listed below are some of the features that make Yurt Workshop yurts special.
Six Rings and Three Ropes
A distinctive feature of the traditional yurt is the three ropes clasping the wall covers to the frame. Its part and parcel of what we believe a yurt should be like. On either side of the door frame are three steel rings, hand forged, to thread the three ropes through. The ropes (or webbings) are tied around the frame to secure the covers and door frame to the lattice walls – in the event of high winds they prevent the covers coming off. In addition, these ropes bind the structure and give the yurt more strength.
Traditional Door Frame
The Mongolian yurt door frame is distinct. It is ALWAYS the same height as the walls. It has a high threshold to prevent the ingress of wind, snow and dust. A low lintel to keep the heat in and avoid heat pockets in the roof above the door. The frame is flat and strong and embedded in are hand forged steel rings to bind the walls to. The door is the same height as the walls and creates a distinct profile*.
*on the smaller yurts with a 4 foot wall height you can choose to have a 1.5m door frame.
Authentic Adjustable Covers
On a Mongolian yurt there is always felt and canvas and in most cases an inner liner and for richer Mongolians an outer liner. These covers are ALWAYS adjustable. Most UK made yurts we have seen have fitted and non adjustable covers. Depending on your climate, budget and what you intend to use the ger for we can advise on what cover(s) will work best for you.
Solid Oak Eight Spoke Mongolian Crown
We make solid oak eight spoke Mongolian crowns using the Mongolian pattern. Simple steam bent crowns are not used on a Mongolian yurt. These crowns are strong, effective and will last many years. Oak is the best wood by far for the crown and just because a real crown takes longer to make it must not be substituted for a simple steam bent crown.
Crown Storm Rope
On our ger crowns, like a real Mongolian ger crown, we attach a rope to the underside. In the event of a storm this is attached to a large stone beneath the crown to prevent the crown lifting. Again we have never seen this important feature on other UK or European made yurts.
100% Wool Felt Cover Felt is the traditional method of insulating and covering a yurt. Felt transforms a tent into a home. 100% wool, 10mm thick it will keep you warm in winter and cool in the summer.
Outer Cover* An outer cover is positioned on top of the canvas. In Mongolia, all yurts have an outer cover over the canvas.
*optional extra
Cotton Liner In Mongolia felt is combined with an outer canvas cover. Between the felt and frame a cotton liner is used to brighten the ger. We now supply felt inner cotton covers made from 100% cotton.
Authentic Look. The overall look is a result of the steam bent curved wall, door frame, door height, felt, cover design. Our ger look and feel like a Mongolian ger. We do not make our ger like the original just for looks and beauty each part needs to function optimally too. This design evolved through many generations – we believe it works.
