Mongolian yurts or ger (ger is the Mongolian word for yurt) are strong, beautiful homes that have evolved through generations since before the times of Genghis Khan. In fact there is evidence that yurts were in use 600BCE.
The design of the Mongolian yurt is timeless and classic, and provides a harmonious space to live within.
Our yurts are made how they should be and unlike most other European yurt makers we dont take shortcuts. As a result Yurt Workshop yurts have a
number of important features that are rarely found on yurts made in Europe.
The frame of our ger are made from chestnut. Each pole is steamed, stripped, cleaned and oiled to create an attractive finish of the correct shape. The wall poles are curved (using steam) as is necessary for a real yurt.
The tonoo (crown) is made from oak. The pattern is Mongolian. Each crown is hand made and finished with oil or painted to order. We have been told they are the crowning glory of our yurts.
Depending on the use you intend for your yurt we offer a range of covers. The first option is a canvas cover. For many this is sufficient and provides an excellent choice. Indeed, we have customers who have told us a canvas cover is sufficient even when its snowing outside.
For others who intend to live in their ger they might consider insulation.
In Mongolia felt insulation is always used. A cotton liner for the inside,
felt for insulation and canvas to keep the rain out. For a well insulated yurt we believe the best experience is gained from using canvas and 100% wool felt. A cotton liner is also important to brighten up the interior where felt has been used as insulation.
