Anna Portisch spent a year in the western-most province of Mongolia, Bayan-Ölgii, conducting fieldwork towards a PhD. This province is popularly known as 'the Kazakh province of Mongolia', and people here live in log cabins or mud brick houses during the long, cold winter and set up their yurt only during the summer. Anna spent part of the summer in a small settlement in the remote and mountainous area of Dayan near the Chinese border, where she had the pleasure of learning first hand about living in a yurt with ever-hospitable and welcoming Kazakh hosts.
